Aboriginal Connections in Croajingolong National ParkMallacoota has a long history of Aboriginal occupation with some evidence suggesting 40 000 years. It is believed that 'Croajingolong' is derived from the name 'Kruaetungalung', the Aboriginal clan of the Ben-Kurnai tribe that inhabited the area of East Gippsland. The Murring people occupied territory to the north of Mallacoota. This area provided a rich source of food to resident Aboriginal clans who left behind an abundance of artefacts and middens.Middens can sometimes still be seen around inlets.Examples of some of these rich foods include mussels and fish, goanna, and various fruits such as pigface, native cherry and coastal beard heath. Very sadly many of the Aboriginal people died from disease as they encountered whites.
